4 ply tires can hold more weight and are a bit thicker so it takes more to puncture a 4 ply tire than a 2 ply tire. 2 ply tires ride a bit smoother than 4 ply, but the 4 ply tires can be made to ride more smoothly by lowering the PSI some in the tires.
